ANDERSON'S BOOKS
We graciously accept from Mr. Chris Reekie the following article.
First, a word from Mr. Reekie.....
"I have written an article on Anderson's Second Edition, "The Game of Draughts Simplified", to mark its publication 160 years ago in 1852 and it is in the March number of the EDA Journal, out now. In this, I point out an oft-repeated inaccuracy that his 1852 book was the second edition of his Guide, published 1848. It was, in his words, "the second edition of the author's works". The two books have different contents.
I have obtained images of the title pages of both 1848 and 1852 books from the National Library of Scotland. (Shown below)
I can also give you a shortened version of my article to use with the images."

Anderson’s Books

Andrew Anderson, the game’s first world champion, published two books, “Anderson’s Guide to the Game of Draughts” in 1848, and in April 1852 ,“The Game of Draughts Simplified”, which established the rules of the game and is famous as “Anderson’s Second Edition”.

His 1852 book was not, as has often been inaccurately stated, the second edition of his Guide. It was, in his own words, “the second edition of the author’s works”. The two books have different contents.

The first has 73 pages, gives 58 games and variations, and offers little advice. One merit is that it includes some of the games Anderson played with James Wyllie in their epic match in 1847. The second has 154 pages, gives games arising from 15 openings and 648 variations, and offers much more guidance. For this, Anderson conferred with 21other players, (19 in Glasgow, one in Newcastle, and one in Bristol), and what became the standard laws were drawn up and circulated to clubs throughout Britain.

Anderson broke new ground by making every game start with black, so replacing the confusing old method of black and white having first move alternately. He decided that all play would be on the black squares and no longer on the white squares. He was the first person to name the openings successfully.

Richard Jordan and James Dallas, in their account of the history of draughts in the 1911 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, said that Anderson’s second print was “the important one”. This was because it “standardised the laws of the game, fixed the nomenclature of the openings, introduced a better arrangement of the play, and, since Anderson was one of the finest players of the game, excelled in accuracy”. W. T. Call, in “The Literature of Checkers” said that Anderson’s Second “at once raised a haphazard art to the dignity of a science”.

Anderson was born at the village of Braidwood, beside Carluke, Lanarkshire, on May3rd 1799 and died there on March1st 1861.The images of the title pages of Anderson’s two books, shown here, are by permission of the Trustees of the National Library of Scotland.

"The Irish Post was the leading Irish owned newspaper in the UK in the 1970's and 80's and continues to this day. B & I was the abbreviation for British and Irish Ferries. That Company ran the main ferry services between Ireland and Britain at the time , but is no longer in existence.

At that time also the London Draughts Association was thriving and had over 50% Irish members in it. One of the annual fixtures held shortly before Christmas time was a match between London Irish and the Rest of London.

The Irish Post and B & I held annual awards for best  sporting achievements by members of the immigrant Irish community. Pat Mc Carthy had won the Irish Championship that year and this picture is of the presentation ceremony.

The two players on the right of the picture are wrongly captioned.
On the extreme right is Danny Shields and standing next to him is Bill Kenny."
