KEITH TODD LETTER

SHOWN IS A PERSONAL LETTER WRITTEN BY MR. KEITH TODD, SENT TO EARL HANGEN IN 1979.

MR. TODD WAS A PROMINENT AMERICAN CHECKERIST FOR MANY YEARS, AND HAD CONTRIBUTED TO MANY DIFFERENT PERIODICALS, IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT MANNERS.

IN HIS LATTER YEARS, HE FOCUSED MAINLY ON MAIL PLAY, AND HAD GARNERED A REPUTATION AS AN EXPERT, COMPETING IN SEVERAL TOURNAMENTS, AND MAIL PLAY LADDERS.

EARL HANGEN HAD SPENT A FEW YEARS GARNERING HIS OWN REPUTATION AS A STRONG MAIL PLAYER (THIS WAS PRIOR TO HIS DAYS AS THE ACF  MAIL PLAY DIRECTOR) AND FINALLY GOT THE CHANCE TO CORRESPOND WITH MR. TODD IN A MATCH.

WHEN EARL ASKED HIM FOR SOME ADVICE, TODD (AN EDUCATED AND SKILLED WRITER) MINCED NO WORDS IN PENNING THIS LETTER, WHICH OFFERS SOME VERY POWERFUL INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF MAIL PLAY CHECKERS AT THE VERY HIGHEST LEVELS.

THIS LETTER IS PUBLISHED HERE WITH THE FULL PERMISSION OF EARL HANGEN.

"TRUE STORY, by PAUL DAYTON"
ABOVE IS AN EARLIER, HANDWRITTEN VERSION OF AN ARTICLE THAT APPEARED IN JIM REED'S "KEYSTONE REVIEW" MAGAZINE. THIS VERSION IS CONTAINED IN A LETTER SENT TO EARL HANGEN BY PAUL DAYTON, THE WRITER OF THE STORY.
IT CONTAINS A HUMOROUS ANALYSIS OF A GAME THAT DAYTON PLAYED WITH HIS DOG....A "TRUE STORY".
ALTHOUGH THE ANALYSIS ITSELF WAS SHOWN IN LATER ISSUES OF KR TO BE FAULTY, IT IS NONETHELESS AN ENTERTAINING READ, AND DEMONSTRATES HOW EVEN A SEASONED VETERAN (SUCH AS DAYTON HIMSELF) CAN OVERLOOK SOME OF THE MORE SUBTLE ASPECTS OF THIS ANCIENT VARIATION ON THE SINGLE CORNER OPENING.
THIS LETTER IS CURRENTLY IN THE POSSESSION OF JAY HINNERSHITZ, WEST READING, PA. U.S., AND IS SUBMITTED HERE WITH THE FULL PERMISSION OF EARL HANGEN.
